MLB Pitcher Ortiz Pleads Not Guilty in Illegal Betting Case (1)

Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz pleaded not guilty to federal charges that he engaged in a scheme to rig bets based on pitches he threw during Major League Baseball games.

Ortiz’s lawyer Elizabeth Geddes entered the not guilty plea at a federal court hearing Wednesday in Brooklyn, New York. US Magistrate Judge Joseph Marutollo released the veteran pitcher on a $500,000 bond and restricted his travel to New York, Boston and Ohio.

Federal prosecutors said Ortiz and teammate Emmanuel Clase de la Cruz “betrayed America’s pastime” when they schemed with gamblers to throw specific types and speeds of pitches. Co-conspirators ...
