Miami Businessman Sentenced to Prison, Restitution in Haitian Telecom Bribery Case

A Miami businessman was sentenced July 30 to nearly five years in prison for his role in a conspiracy to pay bribes on behalf of three Miami-Dade County telecommunications companies to former officials of Haiti Teleco, the country’s state-owned national telecommunications company, prosecutors announced (United States v. Diaz).

In addition to the 57-month prison term, Judge Jose E. Martinez ordered Juan Diaz to pay $73,824 in restitution and to forfeit more than $1 million, U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer said in a written statement.
