A medical director of several hospice companies has been found guilty for his role in a $2.8 million Medicare fraud scheme in Van Nuys, Calif., according to the Justice Department Friday.

John Thropay fraudulently certified Medicare patients of Blue Sky Hospice Inc. as terminally ill so that it could bill Medicare for the services, said the DOJ. He was convicted of one count of conspiring to commit health care fraud and four counts of health care fraud.

Thropay faces a maximum of 10 years in prison for each count.
