Malaysia’s Quest to Take Back Missing 1MDB Billions (2)

Since the corruption scandal involving state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) erupted in 2015, Malaysia has been pushing forward with multiple legal proceedings in the country and beyond to bring those responsible to justice and recoup the lost funds.

The highest-profile player to be convicted on charges related to the scandal is ex-Prime Minister Najib Razak. After losing his final court appeal on Aug. 23, Najib began serving a 12-year prison sentence for graft over millions of dollars sent to his personal bank account from a now-insolvent 1MDB subsidiary. Political observers say he may seek a pardon from Malaysia’s king.
