Jury’s $3.5 Million Award to Man Jailed Over Wrong Name Reversed

A Detroit police officer had probable cause to arrest a man who was wrongfully jailed for nearly two weeks, due to the similarities the man shared with another person sought under an outstanding warrant, the Sixth Circuit said Wednesday, reversing a $3.5 million verdict against the officer.

Officer Thomas Zberkot arrested Marvin Seales in 2012 on a warrant meant for Roderick Siner, who went by the name of Marvin Seals. Despite his claims that he was innocent, Seales was held at a Detroit precinct and later transferred to the Wayne County Jail for 13 days.
