US Immigration and Customs Enforcement failed to return more than $300 million of bond money to immigrant families in violation of contracts with them, according to a proposed federal class lawsuit filed Tuesday.
The complaint filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York seeks to recoup money on behalf of the tens of thousands of families whose bonds weren’t canceled under the terms of their agreement with ICE.
“As a result, the federal government has retained hundreds of millions of dollars to which it is not entitled,” the complaint says.
