Healthcare Company Executives Sentenced for $4 Million Fraud

Two former executives of OrthoNet, a healthcare claims processing company, have been sentenced for their roles in a scheme to steal millions from their employer, according to the Justice Department Tuesday.

Between 2009 and 2017, Shawn Rains and Joseph Maharaj executed a scheme to defraud OrthoNet of $4 million and launder the proceeds.

The duo, alongside co-conspirators, created fake vendors that purportedly worked for the company, said the DOJ. Rains and Maharaj signed invoices approving payment for fake work, which OrthoNet ultimately payed, the government said.
