Hawaii County’s ban on people who were convicted of minor violent crimes purchasing firearms violates the Second Amendment, a lawsuit filed in federal court says.
Glen Shiroma’s complaint, filed Thursday in the US District Court for the District of Hawaii, says that his conviction occurred in 1992 and that it doesn’t disqualify him from buying guns under Hawaii or federal law. Hawaii County nevertheless cited the old conviction as its reason for denying him a permit to acquire a firearm, it says.
