Moldova’s Regional Gagauz Leader Gutul Is Sanctioned by US (1)

Evghenia Gutul, the leader of the autonomous Moldovan region of Gagauzia, was subjected to Russia-related sanctions by the US.

She was added to the US list of Special Designated Nationals on Wednesday for her links to fugitive Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor, the Treasury said in a statement.

Gutul was elected as the regional governor last year on the pro-Russian Shor party ticket. She has been charged by prosecutors in Chisinau for accepting more than 42 million lei ($2.4 million) in illicit funding from Russia, charges she has rejected as “fabricated.”
