Former Hospital Worker Pleads Guilty to HIPAA Privacy Violations

A former employee of the UCLA Healthcare System who used his position to access medical records of celebrity patients, Jan. 8 pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of violating the privacy provision of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, federal prosecutors announced in a written statement (United States v. Zhou).

Huping Zhou entered his plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Andrew J. Wistrich, days before his trial was due to begin on the four misdemeanor counts. He specifically admitted to knowingly obtaining individually identifiable health information without a valid reason, medical or otherwise, the statement noted.
