Former Christian Science Church Head Guilty in $11 Million Fraud

The former chairman of a Los Angeles branch of the Church of Christ, Scientist, pleaded guilty Monday to stealing more than $11.4 million from the church and using it to buy a $2 million home and other personal items, federal prosecutors announced.

Charles Thomas Sebesta, the former chairman of the board for the Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud affecting a financial institution and one count of bank fraud. He has been in custody since August 2019, when he was arrested and accused of stealing millions of from the church.
