The former director of the Markham, Ill., public library, Xavier Menzies, was sentenced to two years in federal prison for embezzling from the library over a decade, the Justice Department announced Thursday.
According to the DOJ, Menzies misappropriated approximately $770,715 from the library by opening bank accounts in the name of the library and depositing checks made out to the library, later withdrawing the funds for personal expenses. He also increased his annual salary without the approval of the Board of Trustees and continued to receive the higher salary for approximately three years.
