Florida Doctors Sentenced in $31 Million Medicare Fraud Scheme

Two Florida doctors have been sentenced for their roles in a $31 million Medicare fraud scheme, according to the Justice Department Friday.

Dean Zusmer and Lawrence Alexander submitted more than $31 million in claims, of which over $15 million was paid, for durable medical equipment for which Medicare beneficiaries had no need. These claims were also procured through the payment of kickbacks, said the DOJ.

Zusmer was sentenced to eight years and one month in prison and ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution while Alexander was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.
