A former NFL linebacker, John Robert Leake, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison and ordered to pay $5.3 million for running a Ponzi scheme in which he defrauded victims by lying about lucrative investments, the Justice Department announced Monday.
According to the DOJ, Leake solicited money from victims by falsely claiming he was participating in multiple lucrative business ventures, including subletting luxury real estate properties and real estate investing, and offering them high rates of return on their investments. However, these investment opportunities were often fabricated and non-existent, devised by Leake to defraud victims.
