Ex-City Commissioner Can’t Shake Records Destruction Conviction

Former Augusta, Ga., city commissioner Sammie Sias lost his appeal to undo convictions for making false statements and destroying records that had been requested as part of a federal investigation into whether he misused county money intended to improve a local community center.

Sias claimed the government failed to prove that his destruction of electronic files was intentional. But the US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit said that because his actions “damaged subpoenaed documents and significantly delayed a federal investigation,” a reasonable factfinder could conclude he’d actively concealed the records.
