California Law Allows Mandatory Fees and Charges in Food Industry

California restaurants, bars, food concessions, grocery stores, and grocery delivery services may charge mandatory fees to consumers, under a bill that went into effect on July 1.

These businesses must clearly display any mandatory fees on advertisements, menus, or other displays containing the prices of food and beverages, under SB 1524. The display must indicate the purpose of the mandatory fee.

SB 1524 does not apply to third-party food delivery platforms.
