LOS ANGELES—A federal judge in Los Angeles, citing “indefensible” conduct, sentenced a certified public accountant based in Santa Barbara, Calif., to 36 months in federal prison March 4 for failing to report more than $1 million on federal tax returns by pretending the money earned through his accounting business came from a charitable foundation, the United States Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles announced March 5 (United States v. Pybrum).
In handing down the sentence to Steven M. Pybrum, U.S. District Judge Gary A. Feess said Pybrum orchestrated a “blatant, calculated, tax-fraud scheme.”
