BHP in Talks to Resolve SEC Probe Of Corruption in Olympics Sponsorship

BHP Billiton Ltd., the world’s biggest miner, said it’s in talks with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to resolve possible breaches of anti-corruption rules linked to its Beijing Olympics sponsorship.

The company is “currently discussing a potential resolution of the matter,” Melbourne-based BHP said Sept. 25 in its annual report.

The SEC probe also involves previously terminated minerals exploration and development projects, the company said. BHP said it’s cooperating with authorities including the Australian Federal Police, which also started a probe.

Ruban Yogarajah, a spokesman for BHP in London, declined to comment further.
