Arizona election departments could no longer accept private funding under a measure the state Legislature passed Wednesday after billionaires such as Mark Zuckerberg donated to help local officials nationwide in 2020.
The Republican-sponsored measure (H.B. 2569) comes in response to groups, including the Center for Tech and Civic Life, that provided grants to government agencies in Arizona and elsewhere for election staffing and equipment. Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, pledged at least $350 million to be re-granted through the organization ahead of the presidential election.
