Woman Shot Five Times by Florida Deputy Keeps $750,000 Award

A 71-year-old woman who was shot five times by a deputy who entered her house at the request of her daughter can keep the $750,000 awarded to her by a jury, the Eleventh Circuit said Sept. 10.

Patricia Emini’s daughter called the Lee County, Fla., sheriff’s office to check up on Ermini. The sheriffs were told Ermini had been drinking, had a gun, and may be suicidal.

When Ermini didn’t respond to the deputies’ knocks, they entered the dark house with flashlights and guns drawn. They found Ermini in her bedroom asleep on her bed.
