Wedding Website Maker Loses Challenge to Nondiscrimination Law

A website designer lost her constitutional challenge to a Colorado law barring advertisements or notices that potential customers may be denied service because of their sexual orientation, a federal court ruled May 17.

Lorie Smith intends to expand her design business, 303 Creative LLC, to provide websites for couples getting married. She wants to post a notice on 303’s own website stating that, due to her Christian beliefs, she won’t create websites for same-sex weddings.

Smith sued the state attorney general and the members of the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, claiming the nondiscrimination law was unconstitutional. The U.S. District Court ...
