The Seventh Circuit supported imposing sanctions on an Illinois youth volleyball club and its owners for their attempts to influence families to opt out of a lawsuit alleging it hid an owner’s history of sexual misconduct.
The court overseeing the class action, the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, didn’t abuse its discretion when it sanctioned Great Lakes Volleyball Inc.'s married owners Ricky and Cheryl Butler for engaging in improper communications that had the potential to coerce class members from participating in the lawsuit, the federal appeals court said on Monday.
