Florida courts may conduct some criminal jury trials remotely, so long as defendants agree to those proceedings, according to an order Thursday from the chief justice of the state supreme court.
Chief Justice Charles Canady’s order extends a similar authorization issued in June 2020 for some civil trials, due to the Covid-19 pandemic conditions that persist statewide.
Defendants must agree to participate in a remote trial, and trial judges must consider the views of prosecutors and victims in determining whether to conduct proceedings remotely, according to Canady’s order.
