A Virginia school board’s policy requiring transgender student Gavin Grimm to use a single-stall restroom as an “alternative” for students with “gender identity issues” violated his constitutional rights, the Fourth Circuit ruled Wednesday.

The Gloucester County School Board violated the equal protection clause and Title IX’s prohibition on sex discrimination in schools by banning Grimm from using restrooms designated for men, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit said, affirming a trial court ruling.
