The US Supreme Court temporarily halted the execution of an Oklahoma inmate whose murder-for-hire conviction isn’t supported by the state attorney general.
The justices on Friday agreed to stay Richard Glossip’s May 18 execution until the court decides whether to hear his appeal.
The conservative-led high court rarely agrees to stay an imminent execution. Glossip’s request, however, wasn’t opposed by Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond, who in April asked a state appellate court to undo Glossip’s conviction for the 1997 beating death of his boss Barry Van Treese.
