US Judiciary Backs Independence for Federal Public Defenders

The US judiciary has endorsed a proposal to make federal defenders offices independent from the court system’s administrative office.

The judiciary’s committee on defender services signaled support for the change, “in concept,” at its June 2024 meeting, according to a report posted Wednesday describing proceedings at its annual September meeting.

Under this structure, the defender offices would remain within the judicial branch but operate outside of the purview of the Judicial Conference, the court system’s policymaking body, and of the Administrative Office of the US Courts.
