Uber, Lyft Business License Law Survives San Francisco Challenge

Drivers for Uber Technologies Inc., Lyft Inc. and other transportation network companies won’t be required to obtain a business registration certificate from the city of San Francisco to conduct rides there, after a state judge on Monday upheld a California law mandating that such drivers need only obtain one license to operate in the entire state.

California’s Senate Bill 182, enacted in 2017, states that drivers only need to obtain business licenses from the local jurisdiction where they live, and prohibits local governments from disclosing personally identifiable information about drivers.
