Trump Tells Appeals Panel He Should Have ‘Absolute Immunity’

Former President Donald Trump told a federal appeals panel on Saturday that he should be granted immunity from prosecution with regard to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election because he was acting within the bounds of his official duties when he took the actions.

Trump made his argument in a filing with the US Court of Appeals in Washington, which is expediting consideration of whether Trump should be immune to the charges brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith for the actions he took in 2020 that culminated in a deadly attack on the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. ...
