President Donald Trump plans to nominate a Louisiana Supreme Court justice and a former top federal prosecutor for US district judgeships in the state.
William Crain is Trump’s pick for a vacancy on the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, and Alexander Van Hook is his choice for a seat on the Western District of Louisiana, Trump posted Monday on Truth Social.
Crain has served on the state’s high court since 2019. Van Hook was acting US attorney for the Western District before the appointment of Zachary Keller. Before that, Van Hook was a line prosecutor in the office for over two decades.
“I have total confidence that Alexander will continue to serve his State, and our Country, with great distinction in this new role,” Trump said in the post.
There are four vacancies on Louisiana’s district courts, including three on the Eastern District and one on the Western District. The latter has sat vacant since 2022 under Joe Biden’s presidency.
Trump appointees would dominate the Western District, where he previously elevated four judges to the seven member active bench.
Biden appointed three judges to the district courts, including Darrel Papillion and Brandon Scott Long to the Eastern District, and Jerry Edwards to the Western District.
