Transgender Utahns Win Right to Amend Their Birth Certificates

Transgender Utahans are entitled to petition a court to change their legal gender designations and amend their birth certificates, a divided state Supreme Court said Thursday.

A district court granted the petitions of Sean Childers-Gray and Angie Rice to change their legal names, but it denied their requests to change their legal sex. The trial court said there was no Utah statute setting forth standards or procedures for such a request and that it would not invade the legislature’s prerogative on the issue.
