Transgender Oregon Inmate Gets Second Chance to Change Name, Sex

A transgender Oregon prisoner will get another chance to officially change her name and gender, as her application was denied based solely on her conviction and incarceration, a state appeals court said.

An order denying a name or gender change must be based on a finding that a change wouldn’t be consistent with the public interest, the Oregon Court of Appeals said.

That is, there must be evidence that the changes were requested for a fraudulent or improper purpose, such as dishonesty, misrepresentation, evading creditors, or interfering with others’ rights, the court said.
