Toyota Sued for Sharing Drivers’ Data With Progressive Insurance

Toyota Motor North America Inc. was sued in federal court for allegedly collecting and selling drivers’ location and vehicle data without their consent in violation of state and federal privacy laws.

Lead plaintiff Philip Siefke alleged that Toyota used its connected-car apps to collect data from its vehicles, and then sold the data to data brokers, including co-defendant Connected Analytic Services, and insurance companies, including co-defendant Progressive Casualty Insurance Co.

Information disclosed by Toyota included GPS locations, frequently used routes, acceleration and braking patterns, phone contacts, music preferences, call logs, and other sensitive personal data, according to a complaint ...
