The Texas Supreme Court agreed Friday to review a proposition that requires Houston to pay police officers and firefighters the same amount, the latest in a string of cases arising out of Houston courts.
The Houston Police Officers’ Union sued the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association and the city, asserting that the law, which was approved by voters in 2018 was preempted by the Fire and Police Employee Relations Act. The trial court granted Houston and HPOU’s summary judgment, invalidating Proposition B on preemption grounds.
