A terrorist suspect’s convictions for making two false statements to an FBI agent during a single interview was reduced to one conviction by the Fourth Circuit Thursday.

Alexander Smith was allegedly trying to go to Syria to join ISIS when an FBI informant offered to help. Smith met with other informants and said he understood he would have to join ISIS. He also helped a fictitious terrorist who allegedly wanted to return to the fight get cheaper airfare.
