The American Federation of Teachers and other public school advocacy groups urged the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a ruling a that a Pennsylvania high school student’s constitutional rights were violated when she was suspended for cussing over social media about her thwarted bid to become a cheerleader.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit ruled in June that the Mahanoy Area School District violated B.L.'s free speech rights by punishing her off-campus speech, which consisted of a picture of her and a friend flipping off the camera with the comment, “f*ck cheer.”
