Susman Godfrey Moves to Halt Trump Order Against Firm (1)

Litigation firm Susman Godfrey on Monday requested a temporary restraining order to halt President Donald Trump’s executive order against the firm.

Susman wants a hearing Tuesday to prevent the order’s enforcement, the firm said in a filing in the US District Court for the District of Columbia. “Emergency relief is necessary,” the firm wrote. Judge Loren AliKhan scheduled a hearing on the request at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Trump’s April 9 order restricts lawyers’ access to government buildings and directs agencies to terminate federal contracts with Susman clients, citing concerns about the firm including its diversity programs for law students. Susman hosts a two-week diversity fellowship for first-year law students and also offers $3,500 scholarships to first- and second-year law students of color.

“Susman Godfrey is seeking immediate relief from the administration’s unconstitutional executive order,” the firm said in a statement. “The order threatens the rights of our clients, including their right to legal counsel, while causing irreparable harm to Susman Godfrey.”

Nine top law firms, including Paul Weiss, Kirkland & Ellis, Willkie Farr and Latham & Watkins, have reached agreements with Trump to provide at least $940 million worth of pro bono services collectively to avoid executive orders and EEOC probes.

Three other firms are fighting Trump’s orders in court: Perkins Coie, WilmerHale, and Jenner & Block. Judges so far in all three other cases have temporarily halted the orders in part from taking effect.

The case is Susman Godfrey v. Executive Office of the President, D.D.C., 1:25-cv-01107, 4/14/2025.
