The US Supreme Court agreed to consider how a 60-day deadline works for immigrants seeking to voluntarily depart the US after they’ve been ordered removed from the country.
The question for the justices in the case accepted for review on Tuesday is whether the deadline may be extended when it expires on a weekend or holiday.
Mexican citizen Hugo Abisaí Monsalvo Velázquez unlawfully entered the US in 2005 and later was ordered to leave. In 2019, he was granted a voluntary departure, which would allow him to avoid harsher immigration consequences and a $3,000 civil penalty.
