The US Supreme Court rejected a case challenging the power police have to detain people during so-called “knock and talk” investigations.
The justices decided on Monday not to look at whether police can detain someone who voluntarily steps outside when they come to the door without a warrant.
Tyler Brienza was arrested in 2015 for refusing to answer questions about a suspected underage drinking party when two Peachtree, Georgia, police officers came to his friend’s house. Brienza sued police for allegedly violating his Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure, and his First Amendment free speech rights.
