A New York state senator’s bid to force a full Senate vote on Gov. Kathy Hochul’s pick for chief judge of the state’s highest court may set precedent for whether a committee can bottle up a judicial nomination.

And the case may end up before the very bench on which the nominee is hoping to preside.

The Senate Judiciary Committee in January denied the elevation of Hochul nominee Hector D. LaSalle to chief judge on the Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court.
