Steve Winwood Beats ‘Gimme Some Lovin’’ Copyright Claims

Rock musician Steve Winwood beat claims that he stole the famous bass riff for the Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’,” in a ruling by the Sixth Circuit.

Evidence of the alleged copyright infringement wasn’t admissible because it was hearsay, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit said Sept. 17.

Willa Dean Parker and Homer Banks wrote “Ain’t That a Lot of Love” in 1965. Steve and Mervyn Winwood wrote “Gimme Some Lovin’” in 1966. Parker and Banks’s wife sued Winwood for copyright infringement in 2017, alleging the bass line in “Gimme Some Lovin’” was lifted from Parker ...
