State lawmakers across the US are moving legislation that would place safeguards on artificial intelligence to curb deepfake videos on individuals, including recent ones featuring celebrities such as pop star Taylor Swift and President Joe Biden.
Legislators in both red and blue states are confronting AI-enabled online abuse, most notably by acting on bills that would ban deepfake pornography but also venturing into other areas. These legislative efforts highlight states’ growing willingness to restrict new technology as efforts in Congress are more halting.
