Squire Patton Boggs Beefs Up Overseas Dispute Resolution Team

Squire Patton Boggs has added even more firepower to its growing international dispute resolution team in New York with six new lawyers from Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle.

The group of attorneys is led by partner Ali Gursel, who will bring along six associates and one counsel to the firm. Their arrival comes just weeks after Miriam Harwood, a veteran international arbitration practitioner, made the same jump.

The firm has also promoted several new partners in its global IDR practice over the last month.

Gursel, like Harwood, has years of experience representing sovereign states, particularly in Central Asia. He’s represented Turkmenistan in investment treaty arbitrations over the past decade.

Harwood noted in an interview this year that Squire Patton Boggs is “positioning itself as the firm representing sovereign states,” and that her own arrival would help bring Central Asia into the firm’s geographical reach.

Gursel also has had a significant focus on the oil and gas industry, and has represented states and state agencies in Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, North and Central America and the Caribbean.

“Ali’s extremely close contacts within governments across the world are highly synergistic with our work in this area. His arrival gives us access to new clients and will also add to the bench strength of our highly regarded team,” George von Mehren, co-global IDR practice group leader at Squire Patton Boggs, said in a statement.

Squire Patton Boggs has some 1,500 lawyers in 20 countries. More than 100 lawyers in the firm have arbitration experience.
