Southwest Airlines to Close Two Flight Attendant Crew Bases

Southwest Airlines Co., which recently announced the first involuntary layoffs in its 53-year history, is closing two satellite flight attendant bases and moving affected employees elsewhere.

  • Change will affect 280 flight attendants in Austin and Fort Lauderdale, Florida
    • Workers will be moved to one of the airline’s other 12 crew bases
  • Bases will be closed on July 1, Southwest said in an emailed statement
  • The shutdowns are part of ongoing steps Southwest is taking to increase efficiency and reduce operating costs
