Small Town Police Not Liable for Menards Parking Lot Tiff

The city of Coon Rapids, Minn., and members of its police force aren’t liable for a heated altercation that took place in a Menards parking lot, a federal appeals court ruled April 11.

Charles and Anita Waters went to the home supply store to exchange a saw. When they were leaving the store’s lumberyard, they refused to let store employees search the trunk of their vehicle, despite signs posted at the yard’s entrance and exit stating that vehicles leaving the lumberyard were subject to inspection, according to the court. The employees in turn refused to open the exit gate.
