The U.S. Senate unanimously adopted a resolution March 17 to hold online classified advertising site Backpage.com LLC in civil contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena for information about how the site screens advertisements for sex trafficking.
The resolution (Sen. Res. 377) directs the Senate Legal Counsel to bring a civil action to enforce the subpoena, which was issued by the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations as part of its online human trafficking investigation.
Backpage has refused to comply with the subpoena, despite the subcommittee overruling the site’s legal objections.
