The U.S. Supreme Court has stayed the planned execution of an Alabama cop killer with dementia while it considers whether to take up his latest challenge to his death sentence over claims he can’t remember his crime.
The 11th-hour stay on Jan. 25 prompted dissent from Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel A. Alito, Jr., and Neil M. Gorsuch.
The high court last Nov. 6 reversed a federal appeals court’s decision that found Vernon Madison incompetent to be executed. It must now decide whether it will consider what his lawyers say is new evidence that backs up his claim.
