Samuel Alito Is Latest Supreme Court Justice to Ink a Book Deal

Aug. 5, 2025, 10:42 PM UTC

Samuel Alito will join the majority of justices who have written a book since joining the Supreme Court.

Alito will publish a book next year under Basic Books’ Basic Liberty imprint, a publicist for Basic Books said. CNN first reported Alito’s book deal Monday.

Details about the book’s title, publication date and subject aren’t yet available, the publicist said.

Alito, who was appointed by George W. Bush, will mark his 20th anniversary on the court in January 2026.

Alito has been a reliable conservative since taking the seat previously held by Sandra Day O’Connor. Most notably, he authored the 2022 opinion overturning a constitutional right to abortion.

It’s unclear if book writing will prove as lucrative for Alito as some of his colleagues, and whether he will be as willing to market it.

Other Deals

Amy Coney Barrett reportedly signed a $2 million deal for her memoir, “Listening to the Law: Reflections on the Court and Constitution,” which is scheduled to be published in September.

The book will detail Barrett’s time as a justice and how she deals with “media scrutiny,” according to her publisher Sentinel Books, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group.

Barrett is scheduled to promote the book with a fall tour that includes appearances at the National Constitution Center, Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum and the National Book Festival.

In June, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson reported making over $2 million off her memoir last year, which was in addition to the $893,750 she advance she reported earning in 2023.

Associate justices received a salary of $298,500 in 2024, according to the Federal Judicial Center.

Justice Neil Gorsuch reported receiving $250,000 for his book, which was also published last year. In “Over Ruled: The Human Toll of Too Much Law,” which he co-authored with his former law clerk, Janie Nitze, Gorsuch wrote about the impact of overregulation.

Gorsuch received a total of $500,000 in book royalties from HarperCollins Publishers LLC, paid in two installments in 2021 and 2023.
