Raytheon Patent on Gas Turbine Engines Revived on Appeal

A U.S. appeals court reversed a patent review board’s finding that had invalidated a Raytheon patent related to geared turbofan jet engines.

  • U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit reversed finding by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board that favored rival General Electric, which had filed a petition saying certain claims of the Raytheon patent were obvious
  • Three-judge panel, in opinion issued Friday in Washington, said “GE failed to provide an evidence-based case for how the turbofan engine” claimed in the patent and having a particular power density was enabled by a publicly available disclosure
