Racial Disparities Ongoing in Michigan Judicial Discipline

Disparities between how Black and White judges are punished for wrongdoing are present in Michigan’s disciplinary system, according to a new report from the National Center for State Courts.

Where the disparities lie in the process, which is led by the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission, depends on multiple factors, according to the report, which the state Supreme Court released Friday. It builds on another the NCSC released last year as it tries to find the source of the disparities.

At least part of the problem is with the disciplinary system itself, the report concludes.
