Puerto Rico Cockfighting Club Wants Ban Paused Pending Appeal

A Puerto Rico cockfighting club asked the First Circuit to suspend the pending federal ban on the commonwealth’s “national sport” while it appeals a ruling upholding the law over island-wide opposition.

“Puerto Rico does not have the resources to foster the unemployment avalanche coming its way as a result of the ban,” the club says in court papers filed Dec. 8.

The ban, which passed last year as part of the farm bill, is set to take effect Dec. 20. The lawsuit blasted it as a paternalistic assault on a “cultural right of all Puerto Ricans.” The case was filed ...
